Around the 17th-century in Italy a console table was a major manifestation of the culture of furniture made for the purpose of display. Many examples of the period were carved and were in fact some of the finest pieces of sculpture as much as furniture. An opulent group of consoles was made in 1675-78 for the Palazzo Colonna in Rome; where the supports for the tops were commonly carved as human figures eagles tumbling putti (cupids) luxuriant foliage and dolphins and they often were gilded.
Another great area for console tables is the den or family room. Console tables with two or three large drawers are a perfect place to store all those board games that the family will gather to play on game night.
Next beat up the table. Yes you read that right. There is no old country table that is in perfect condition which means you need to use the file or sandpaper to rough up the edges. If you want it to look well used you can use the hammer to make a few dings.
While many people only see console tables as pieces that would go in the living room they can really be spread throughout the house to offer a number of storage opportunities. You could place one console table in the entryway as a place to put away keys the mail or other small items you may regularly have as you walk in and out of the house. This would be a great place for a more ornate console table. It could have one drawer to put those little items out of the way but the rest could be a beautiful piece of wrought iron or hand tooled wood that will put visitors in awe as soon as they step in the door.
Generally the sofa or chair is placed pointing towards a TV. The reference height and the profile of the household should be taken into consideration. Make sure that the seating spot should be accessible from any part of the room.
Console tables are often found placed against walls and in some cases are attached to the wall making them more secure. These small tables are sometimes used for display and decorative purposes providing a secure surface on which to stand a lamp or perhaps some flowers. With such versatility and a wide selection of shapes styles and sizes you are sure to find a one that suits your home at a price you can afford.
