Cracking. One way to make wood console tables look old is to give them a cracked finish. Think about the look of an old table pulled out of a farm house after generations. The paint is starting to crack and break away from the surface. It used to be it took a lot of work to create this look but not anymore. There are 'crackle paints' or crackle additives to add to paint that will make this finish happen very easily. Often all you have to do is apply 1-2 coats and you will have created an antique look with ease.
When decorating a home there is always a balance to be reached while choosing the right furniture. You want something that suits the style you are trying to create in your home but you also need to make sure it is a functional piece of furniture that will fulfill any needs you may have in your home.
Generally the sofa or chair is placed pointing towards a TV. The reference height and the profile of the household should be taken into consideration. Make sure that the seating spot should be accessible from any part of the room.
If you are using one color of paint you may want to water it down to create a more 'whitewashed' look while painting.
The real trick though may be finding where to put all that stuff. Instead of plopping things on a chair or putting more things on an existing coffee or accent able consider adding console tables to your home. Console tables bump up nicely against a wall to add additional display space and storage room without adding a cluttered appearance to the living area.
While many people only see console tables as pieces that would go in the living room they can really be spread throughout the house to offer a number of storage opportunities. You could place one console table in the entryway as a place to put away keys the mail or other small items you may regularly have as you walk in and out of the house. This would be a great place for a more ornate console table. It could have one drawer to put those little items out of the way but the rest could be a beautiful piece of wrought iron or hand tooled wood that will put visitors in awe as soon as they step in the door.
