Around the 17th-century in Italy a console table was a major manifestation of the culture of furniture made for the purpose of display. Many examples of the period were carved and were in fact some of the finest pieces of sculpture as much as furniture. An opulent group of consoles was made in 1675-78 for the Palazzo Colonna in Rome; where the supports for the tops were commonly carved as human figures eagles tumbling putti (cupids) luxuriant foliage and dolphins and they often were gilded.
As you undertake the purchase of console tables to help with your storage problems you need to make a note of what you need before you buy. How much storage do you really need console tables to provide? Do you have minor to moderate storage needs? You may want to look at tables that are more ornate but only have a little storage area like one long drawer. But if you realize you have a lot of things you need to find a place to put away you should look for more practical console tables with more drawers or shelving options you can use to get control of your clutter.
Start with unfinished wood console tables or one that you can take the current paint off of. If the table has any sort of finish you will need to use a stripping agent to remove that before moving forward with this project.
Decorating a console table depends on two factors - decor theme of your home and the placement. When it comes to a decor theme you need to be very clear about the same. Before you start the process of placing home decor items on a table ensure that you have chalked out a rough plan. The best way to go about it is by jotting down what all needs to be placed on a table. If the table is placed in a foyer or a hallway then it will be decked up in a manner to facilitate easy access to day-to-day items. When placed in a living or a dining room the console table is used for placement of decor items or decanters.
If you are using one color of paint you may want to water it down to create a more 'whitewashed' look while painting.
Distressed Painting. Another option is to create a distressed paint look on your wood console tables for added character. This is going to take a little more work and a few more supplies. You will need 1-2 colors of paint a hammer file sandpaper and patience. First you need to have an unfinished table. If your table already is great; if not you need to strip it down before beginning.
